Fenland Summer report

Published: Friday, 15 July 2011

AFTER a very dry May, June proved be somewhat damp with many days of heavy rain and high winds, writes Kelvin Alexander-Duggan.

The wet  June slowed down the growth of weed, but having been informed that Brian Holmes was heading this way on his boat Thursdays Child, The weed cutter teams have been out in force clearing the way for his passage.

Warning

The grass on the moorings has been mowed. Unlike British Waterways the Middle Level Commissioners do warn you before hand, when they are going to mow the grass. British Waterways take note!

New moorings

The new moorings at Benwick have proved to be a success with boat owners. The mooring are located in the dead centre of the village, where you can be sure of a quiet night, but his may not be the case on ‘All Hallows Eve'.

The local Pub the Five Alls is just five minutes walk away over the bridge, where a range of local ales and home cooked food is available. Sadly the village shop closed some years ago, thought the 56 bus runs every two hours into March.

On a final note, since the Environment Agency office in Peterborough closed, there has been a problem with getting visitor licences, but hopefully something can be arranged for next year, Maybe the licences being sold by Tina at Stanground.

Current local riverside fuel price is £1.25 per litre 60/40.
