Residents want canal closed off

WHILST British Waterways is doing all its can to promote the waterways for visitors, people in Stretford have been fighting to keep access to  the Bridgewater Canal closed.

The residents realising the dangers to children that the waterway presents, fearing the two proposed accesses would have put their children's lives at risk and lead to increases in anti-social behaviour, have fought the plans by Peel Holdings to open up the canal,  and have succeeded, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Keep it closed off

The residents signed petitions, wrote protest letters to Trafford Council, involved the local housing group and contacted  local MP Kate Green, who also supported their campaign to keep the waterway closed off.

The proposed development was for a new ramped access from the housing estate onto the canal towpath, but under such protest from residents Peel Holding have withdrawn both planning applications, so the waterway remains blocked off with the promise from the company that 'the access points will not be progressed further'.
