Caldon closed

NAVIGATION of the Caldon Canal has been stopped owing to its bank and towpath collapsing at Hanley today (Thursday).

Over 12 yards of the wall retaining the waterway and the towpath have collapsed into the canal, leaving British Waterways no alternative but to drain the pound between Etruria Staircase LockĀ  2 (pictured) and Planet Lock 3, and close the canal, Ralph Freeman tells us.

Investigating

This is adjacent to a private development, and British Waterways staff are currently investigating the failure and working with the developers' contractor.

Both the canal and towpath will remain closed until further notice.
