A YOUNG woman has been seriously sexually assaulted by a man on the towpath of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal at Burnley.

The women was walking along the towpath at around 11pm on Tuesday (28th September) when a man came up and grabbed her and forced her onto rough grass by the side of the waterway assaulting her, Alan Tilbury reveals.

Cowardly attack

Police have told that the man is Asian, 5ft 8in tall with a round face and cleanly shaven, with Detective Superintendent Neil Esseen stating:

"This is a cowardly attack on a vulnerable female member of our community and I would appeal for anyone with information to come forward and contact us.

"Despite the heavy rain on that night, the canal towpath is often used by boat owners, dog walkers and joggers so it is possible that someone may have seen the victim either before or after the attack and we would urge them to get in touch with us.

The police are advising people to be extra vigilant when on the towpath, though there is a promise of extra police patrols.
