No clean-up at Harecastle

A COUNCILLOR is complaining of British Waterways attitude towards the state of the waterway around Harecastle Tunnel.

Councillor Kyle Robinson wants British Waterways to clean up the area around the tunnel on the Trent & Mersey Canal with walls covered in graffiti and a damaged bridge that  has been left in need of repairs for months.

Requests for work

He accused British Waterways of neglecting the site, notwithstanding repeated requests for work to be carried out, explaining:

"When I spoke to British Waterways about the graffiti and the bridge they basically turned it around and said it was up to the local authority to tidy up the area. They just passed the buck.

"Then they suggested I find some volunteers to tidy up the canal, but it's their responsibility."

Difficult struggle

A spokesman for British Waterways told him that 'it faces a difficult struggle to tackle graffiti and other anti-social behaviour', and added that 'more people were using the canal now than ever before'.

To which Kyle Robinson told that meant there was all the more reason to do something.
