POLICE have discovered a cannabis factory in an old canalside cottage on the Grand Union Canal near Weedon.

During a raid plants worth £500,000 were seized from the run-down cottage opposite the Narrowboat Inn by Bridge 26 on the waterway, Alan Tilbury tells us.

1,000 cannabis plants

The raid was part of Operation Guardian, with 19 police officers taking part in the dawn raid on the property, where 1,000 cannabis plants, bags of fertiliser and electrical equipment were discovered. Having no power supply, the men had  illegally hooked into the electric mains.

The three downstairs rooms of the property were filled with cannabis plants, while four upstairs bedrooms were also being used to grow other illegal plants.  Two men, one the owner of the cottage, have been arrested.

A local boater told that the curtains were always closed, and that there was a peculiar smell emitting from the property.
