What's the point?

THE Waterways Recovery Group recently spent two weeks working on a section of the Montgomery Canal, destroying a lush landscape, for little avail.

What was an overgrown section of canal full of lush flora and wildlife now looks like a lunar landscape, Dave Hancock's photograph shows, and writes:

My wife and I are members of Friends of the Montgomery Canal and fully support the main restoration work which the Montgomery Waterway Restoration Trust is undertaking north of Crickheath.

The problem is that the section worked on by The Waterway Recovery Group may not be in water for five, 10 or 20 years so was this destruction of the canal really worthwhile at this time?
