Macclesfield closed at swing bridge

Published: Monday, 12 July 2010

THE powered swing bridge at Oakgrove (Bridge 49) on the Macclesfield Canal has been damaged, and is in the closed position to boats, Ralph Freeman writes.

The road barrier on the towpath side has been broken off and the mechanism left in an indeterminate state. As a result of this and possibly other damage, the bridge is out of action and closed to canal traffic at the moment.

BW staff are on site, but with the bridge being operated by an electronic control panel specialised staff will need to attend.

The only good news for the boats held up is there is the Fools Nook pub nearby and 48hr moorings too!

LATEST:

Quick action by the repair crew, working in much needed rain, had the repair completed and the bridge open at noon today (Monday).
