Deer dying in Fossdyke

Published: Thursday, 10 June 2010

IT IS estimated that 16 dead deer have been pulled from the Fossdyke Navigation in the past six weeks.

Some believe  that young deer have been tempted into the water by the recent hot weather, then being unable to get out with water levels sometimes being low.  Yet another theory is that young males have been forced out of the area by a dominant older buck.

Try to cross country

However a spokesman for British Waterways explained:

"Due to the number of cases we think it's unlikely that the recent warmer weather has been a significant contributing factor and it could simply be down to the deer getting into difficulty as they try to cross country."

Special deer ramps has been installed on the Fossdyke, but obviously the deer are not aware of them...
