Heritage milepost found

IT WAS some four to five years ago that work on Shebdon Embankment meant the heritage milepost situated opposite the Shebdon winding hole had to be removed to Norbury yard for safekeeping.

Whilst it was there our Brian refurbished it pending its reinstatement,  writes Paul Mills.

When the embankment work was finished the request was made to the contractor to put the milepost back, and though it was collected from Norbury it alas never appeared back on the towpath—it had been lost! (The photograph shows Brian with a Shropshire Union signpost he had repainted.)

After deliberations, BW asked us to supply a replica from our casting pattern, and this was duly done and the replica installed by our small tasks team.

This year we all know about the leakage at Shebdon and the lowering of water levels, but guess what? The original milepost was located in the bed of the canal near to where it should have been installed.

Pleased to say this has been recovered and is safely stored at Norbury where it will be refurbished and a decision made as to where it will be located.

What a happy ending.
