DUCKWEED has taken over huge swathes the Regent's and Grand Union canals in London.

DuckweedLittle Venice2The present heatwave has caused an unprecedented amount of duckweed to form on the canals, with the photograph showing the waterway at Little Venice covered in green, Keith Gudgin reports.

Allows weed to form

There has been little boat movement on the Regent's Canal allowing the weed to form and clog-up the waterway.

At the moment an attempt is being made by Canal & River Trust to clear the duckweed, but is proving a big job, as the photograph by Jim Cracken shows.

In some parts of the system, not only is duckweed forming but also Blue-green algae that is toxic.
