Huddersfield Narrow locked down

THE Huddersfield Narrow Canal will be locked down from Monday 8th August.

There will be no navigation allowed along the entire waterways from Huddersfield in the East to Upermill in the West, with just eight miles still open from its junction with the Peak Forest (that is also closed) and the Ashton canals, Keith Gudgin tells us.

Huddersfield stuckDry weather

The trust tells that this is due to the continued 'drawdown' of the reservoirs because of prolonged low rainfall and with the forecast for further dry weather.

The locks, 24 West to 1 East, will be padlocked closed and the gates will be ashed up to reduce leakage. To prevent use, measures will be taken to make the locks inoperable.

The photograph shows the problems caused by leakage.

Likely throughout August

It’s not clear how long the closure will last for but it’s likely to be throughout August and potentially beyond if there are not significant and sustained periods of rainfall.
