Pocklington Canal celebrations

FOLLOWING your comments about the well-deserved awards to the Chesterfield Canal, may I also mention the Pocklington that was also a recipient of a Green Flag Award, writes Howard Anguish.

This was for the great work that is underway at the moment as part of the joint efforts by Canal & River Trust and the Pocklington Canal Amenity Association (PCAS).

Funds to refurbish locks

Funded by an HLF grant so that much work can be carried out to enable long overdue conservation work, and to enhance the enjoyment by visitors the work has already transformed sections of the canal, and is supplemented by an additional and complementary project carried out by PCAS who raised sufficient funds to refurbish two locks and carried out additional work to increase the navigable length by nearly two miles, allowing navigation as far as Bielby.

The completion of this second project is being marked by events on the canal next week which marks the official opening of these two refurbished locks and to celebrate this significant step forward in eventually making the dream come true of total restoration to the beautiful canal in East Yorkshire.

The Canal will also celebrate the bi-centenary of the opening of the canal and will also be marked by a boat rally with events at and around the moorings at Melbourne, also taking place over this coming weekend, 28th and 29th.
