Baby saved from drowning

A BABY'S grandparents had failed to notice that the buggy holding the baby they were looking after had rolled into the Nottingham Canal and submerged,

It was only the passing cyclist, John Hess, who saw what had happened who leaped off his bike and rushed to the water's edge to pull the buggy out, with luckily the baby still strapped in, and was able to save it, Alan Tilbury reports.

Did not seem to be aware

A former BBC ex-political editor, John Hess told the BBC:

"It didn't matter how much I shouted at the grandmother; she didn't seem to be aware until late on, almost as the buggy slipped into the water.

"The baby and the buggy were in the water longer than anyone would want, and I really did struggle to get it out.

"They are all very lucky, it could have been much worse."

It is understood the grandparents were in such shock that they sought medical attention afterwards.
