Despite the stupidity of Manchester’s councillors who want to have the canal fenced off, imagine what an oasis of tranquillity it would be if all city canals were fenced off to everyone bar boaters? Writes Kevin McNiff.

I remember the first time I went into Gas Street Basin in 1977, there was only a door to allow people in and from Cambrian Wharf down the ’13, all access from the city was closed off.
