Breach closes Middlewich Branch

AN EMBANKMENT failure on the Middlewich Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal has closed the waterway.

The failure of the embankment is at the Middlewich end of the Branch, between Wardle and Stanthorne locks, Keith Gudgin tells us.

Pound nearly empty

As contractors are at present assessing the situation, the seriousness of the breach is not known, but we have been told by a boater that the pound between the two locks is nearly empty, with moored boats affected.

With only 13 days left to Easter and the virtual start of the boating season, those wishing to complete the Four Counties Ring will most likely be unlucky, as will those wanting to cruise the Llangollen from the Trent & Mersey Canal.
