Leicester Section to be closed indefinitely

THOUGH the normal email official stoppage notice has not been released, we have been told that the  Leicester Section of the Grand Union Canal above Leicester is now closed indefinitely from today, Wednesday.

It was the Canal & River Trust man (pictured) in charge of this section up to Kilby Bridge that told us earlier today (Sunday):

"The Leicester Line will be closed this Wednesday indefinitely, I don't know if it will be for a month or for twelve months."

He then told of the continuing problems with the section, our having had many problems ourselves on our cruise as Victor will further relate.

Lacking maintenance

It is very obvious seeing the state of the waterway above Leicester that it has been lacking maintenance, with drastic leaking gates and low pounds.

Proving without a doubt with it needing four emergency stoppages over the present two months and the continuing closure notices of the various locks.  It is only hoped it can be properly sorted, and not prove to be the first of many...
