OVER the past month Lizzie Carr, made famous by being the first female in history to solo paddle board across the English Channel, has been busy with her Plastic Patrol of the waterways.

As a dedicated environmentalist she has been paddling various canals collecting plastic out of the water starting in July at Gloucester docks and will be ending clearing out plastic waste from the Rochdale Canal in Rochdale this coming Saturday the 19th.

She is highlighting the problem of plastic that is discarded into the canals, and fishing it out into bags on her paddle board at the various locations under the title of Plastic Patrol, explaining:

“Plastic pollution is the single biggest environmental catastrophe affecting our planet today. And the worst part, we’re responsible. Plastic is an entirely man-made material so every single piece you see littering the planet is a direct result of our actions.

“During my adventures I found that a lot of the plastic I came across was caught up in reeds away from the towpath so getting on the water and cleaning up by paddle board means accessing pockets of the waterways that might otherwise remain untouched.  I’d just love to have like minded people come along, have fun and do something for the environment whilst getting active.”
